Merstham with kids: playgrounds, library play and local dance

Merstham makes a useful small-scale family day: a play at the refurbished Rec, books and toys at Portland Drive, or a class at the community hub. The library has Tuesday play and rhymes for under-fives, Saturday LEGO for primary-age builders and a quieter additional-needs session later that afternoon. RSB brings ballet and street dance to the hub; South Merstham’s All Saints has its own parent-and-toddler group. Pack refreshments rather than planning around either café: the council pages still describe both hub and Rec provision as awaiting an operator or opening.

Start with outdoor play at the Rec
Merstham Recreation Ground is the straightforward outdoor choice. The refurbished play area combines climbing, sliding and balancing with sensory and percussion instruments. Its accessible slide, wet-pour surface and continuous path are useful specifics for families looking beyond a generic promise of inclusive play. The council records PiPA Gold accreditation for the design.
The paths make it easier to take a buggy around the grounds, while the picnic area and orchard offer a different pace after the equipment. Pavilion toilets opened in December 2025. Do not treat the parkour course as an extension of the younger children’s playground: it is for over-12s. The council still describes the water-channel habitat as fenced off and the café kiosk as awaiting opening, so take a drink and snack.

Choose the library session that fits your child
At Portland Drive, a baby or toddler can join Tuesday Hublets Stay and Play from ten until quarter to twelve. Rhymetime sits within that morning at half past ten, with another session on Friday. Rhymetime places need a ticket from the desk on the day; arriving at the building does not guarantee a space in the singing session.
For older children, Saturday LEGO is aimed at five- to eleven-year-olds and costs a pound. Later that afternoon the Additional Needs and Disabilities Stay and Play offers books, games and toys during a quieter, low-light and low-footfall period. It welcomes siblings too and does not require booking.
The toy library is worth knowing about even when you do not need a group. Borrowing a toy costs a pound for three weeks and requires library membership. The branch has automatic doors and a hearing loop; parking directly outside is limited to an hour.

Try a regular dance class without travelling across the borough
RSB teaches ballet and street dance at Merstham Hub on term-time Saturdays. Ballet runs from pre-school introductions into graded classes; the school should help choose the right level rather than treating every time slot as interchangeable. Mini and Junior street dance serve different primary-age groups within the same local programme.
Ask directly about current tuition and trial terms before enrolling. A trial is a way to decide whether a class suits your child, not a promise of free ongoing lessons.

Find a parent-and-toddler group in South Merstham
Little Saints meets on Wednesday mornings in term time, from nine until half past eleven. It is a church-run parent-and-toddler group associated with All Saints, so a grown-up stays with the child rather than dropping them off. Contact the church office for joining arrangements.
All Saints also has Sunday Christian faith groups: S Club Tots starts from age three, and S Club serves school Years 2–6 in Canada Hall. These accompany worship rather than operating as secular activity classes. Monthly All Together services and summer Café Church change the usual group pattern.

Use the current calendar for a half-term workshop
The library hosts visiting organisers as well as its regular programmes. Explore Learning’s Grand Maths Wizard workshop has an explicit 29 October 2026 booking for seven- to nine-year-olds, practising multiplication and division. It is free but needs a place booked in advance. Check the listing and organiser for current availability rather than expecting the same workshop every holiday.
- The Grand Maths Wizard — Halloween workshop
A Halloween-themed maths workshop practising multiplication and division for ages seven to nine.
