Chandler’s Ford with kids: playgrounds, local classes and library stops

Chandler’s Ford gives families several different ways to get out without turning a small outing into a long day. Fryern combines fenced play with ball games and a halfpipe, while Hiltingbury adds a circular path, skate park and community classes at The Hilt. Hocombe Mead and Hiltingbury Lakes suit a quieter change of pace among trees, meadows and water. Around Fryern Arcade, the library brings books, rhymes and construction into the mix. Plan indoor visits carefully this autumn: its November closure and upper-floor restriction matter as much as choosing a class that fits your child.

Choose a playground that fits the afternoon
Fryern is a useful mixed-age choice: younger children have a fenced play area while older siblings can use the ball court and halfpipe. Adjacent Jubilee Garden adds a quieter place to sit.
Hiltingbury has its own playground, skate park and MUGA, connected by a circular network of accessible paths. Pennine Way offers two fenced play areas and paths for walking, cycling or scooting. These are separate parks, not different names for one site.
- Fryern Recreation Ground
Climb and slide, play ball or try the halfpipe at Fryern.
- Hiltingbury Recreation Ground
Mix playground time with scooting, ball games and a circular walk.
- Pennine Way Recreation Ground
Choose between two fenced play areas and a path network for a local outdoor break.
Slow down by woodland, meadow and water
Hiltingbury Lakes lies off Hiltingbury Road, just west of Kingsway shops. Its woodland and water make a different kind of outing from a playground; parking is on surrounding streets and fishing requires a licence.
At Hocombe Mead there are interpretation boards and an accessible viewing platform overlooking North Meadow. There are no on-site facilities and no parking at either end: use the council’s approach from Ashdown Road shops.
- Hiltingbury Lakes
Follow a woodland-and-lake outing close to Hiltingbury Road.
- Hocombe Mead
Look for woodland wildlife and meadow plants on a local nature walk.
Make room for books and free activities
Rhymetime is advertised on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Monday Storytime welcomes children five and under and continues with Play and Stay; Saturday construction is for ages four and over, with carers staying in the library.
Home-educating families can meet on Friday mornings. The library will close 16–21 November 2026 for fire-safety work, reopening Monday 23 November. Do not use the lift to the upper floor unless you can leave by the stairs unaided in an emergency; staff can collect upstairs books, with possible waits at busy times.

Book a dated autumn outing
Baby Songs & Senses has actual Tuesday afternoon dates from 27 October, at 14:30 and 15:30, with £8.50 covering a baby and one adult; sibling and extra-adult charges apply. These are separate booking options, not a promise that every future Tuesday runs.
For a seasonal outing, the Gentle Explorers Halloween Special is at The Hilt on 1 November 2026, 10:00–11:30. Standard admission is £6.50 per adult and child, with babies under five months exempt. Book ahead; refreshments and face painting cost extra.
Eager Explorers has six explicitly advertised Wednesday dates from 4 November to 9 December. PAYG and course prices differ, and babies and siblings have separate ticket conditions. For parent-and-baby company, NCT’s Ramalley Scouts Hall session has a next explicit date of 30 October; check its full platform price and ticket option.
- Gentle Explorers Halloween Special

- NCT Eastleigh Bumps and Babies with feeding support

Plan your next local outing
Check the organiser’s joining and booking arrangements before a class. Choose one main activity, then add a nearby outdoor or book stop if children still have energy.
