Hedge End with kids: playgrounds, local classes and library stops

Hedge End works well for a short, local outing built around the village centre or an active outdoor stop. The library has rhymes, stories, construction and board games, with Greta Park’s basketball court and halfpipe close by. Woodhouse Lane offers a larger skatepark and bookable tennis, while neighbourhood ball-game spaces give children other places to move. Younger children have Dance Tots at the Old School House; older primary pupils can register for the council’s Junior Youth Club. The paddling pool is a summer plan, not an autumn promise: it is currently closed for the season.

Pair books with outdoor play
Hedge End Library is at 11 Upper Northam Road. It is on one accessible floor, with weekday openings on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday plus a shorter Saturday. Tuesday and Friday are closed.
Greta Park has a free enclosed full-sized basketball court next to the library and a separate halfpipe behind it. Parking beside the court is limited. Choose a simple library-and-ball-games plan rather than crossing town for every activity.

Junior Youth Club is for Year 5 and 6 children living in Hedge End. Friday sessions at The Community Hub, Wildern School run 16:30–18:00 and cost £3.50. Registration comes before booking, so email the youth team before turning up.

Save paddling for the right season
The paddling pool is currently closed for the season. Its usual season is mid/late May to September, with daily hours 10:00–18:00 subject to maintenance. It is for under-12s only.
For pool visits when open, the council recommends free parking at the former Budgens site beside Greta Park, accessed via Wildern Lane, rather than nearby residential roads. No dogs, fires or barbecues are allowed at the pool.
- Hedge End Paddling Pool
A seasonal under-12s paddling option at St John’s Recreation Ground.
Check the November baby-course enquiry
Five to Thrive starts at Hedge End Salvation Army on 24 November 2026, 10:00–11:30. The free four-week course combines parenting information, sensory activity and singing. It is conditional on registration with the eligible Hampshire health-visiting service; Southampton, Portsmouth and Isle of Wight services are excluded.
Online ticket sales have ended. Email hhf@barnardos.org.uk with the course date to enquire about attending; do not turn up expecting a place. The remaining course dates are not inferred from the four-week label.
