Lisnasharragh with kids: swimming, stories and outdoor play

Build a family outing around Lisnasharragh’s Montgomery Road leisure base, with two different local stops in its surrounding catchment: Clonduff Drive playground for outdoor play and Cregagh Library on upper Cregagh Road for books, stories and rhymes. Babies and younger children have water-confidence groups or Rhythm and Rhyme; older children can develop swimming or gymnastics skills. Choose a single activity or combine a swim with a quieter library visit, checking each venue’s hours and booking arrangements separately.

Build the outing around the right pool session
This guide uses Lisnasharragh as the approved leisure-led local catchment around Montgomery Road, rather than claiming a legal neighbourhood boundary or covering the whole electoral area. Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre is on Montgomery Road, with its owner address printed as Castlereagh, Belfast BT6 9HS. Clonduff Drive playground is a separate outdoor stop nearby; Cregagh Library is on upper Cregagh Road. Each keeps its own name and access arrangements. The leisure centre’s different pools and classes need their own bookings.
Swim for All is the family general-swim choice, welcoming all ages and abilities in an open layout, with a roped-off lane section where possible. Swim for Fitness is a different session for competent lane swimmers aged 11 and over. Use the Better app or online activity booking to select the right format and check the time. The leisure centre’s normal building hours are Monday–Friday 6am–10pm and weekends 8am–5pm; pool and class access can be narrower.
Under-eights and non-swimmers under 16 need active supervision by a competent adult swimmer, with no more than two such children per adult. Under-eights and all non-swimmers must stay in shallow water. Plan who will enter the water before buying tickets; being present on the premises is not the same as actively supervising a child in the pool.

Choose a baby or pre-school water-confidence group
The dedicated swimming-lessons page names four early-years groups. Dippers is for 3–12 months and is advertised on Mondays, 2.45–3.15pm, with parent-and-baby bonding and water basics. Splashers is for 13–24 months on Tuesdays, 11–11.30am, building confidence with a parent alongside. Paddlers is for 24–36 months on Tuesdays, 11.30am–noon, laying the foundations for later independent swimming.
Pre-School is the separate 3–5-year group on Tuesdays, 3.15–3.45pm. It develops confidence and essential skills, and parents are still expected to accompany children in the water. The SWIMBiES lessons take place in the diving pool with instructors guiding from the water. Follow the named group’s age band and your joining confirmation rather than the introductory SWIMBiES paragraphs, which give different overall age ceilings.
Book the actual available course and confirm its complete current payment terms before attending. A lesson programme is not a casual swim ticket, and the advertised weekday pattern does not establish a particular half-term occurrence. If your child is moving between the overlapping toddler bands, ask the operator which class fits their development rather than choosing by a rounded year label.

Move from first strokes to confident swimming
Foundation is for school-aged beginners aged four and over. Red, Amber and Green stages introduce water safety, survival and the four strokes, working towards ten metres of independent swimming. Half-hour groups are advertised Monday–Friday from 3.45pm through 6.15pm. Foundation uses the diving or main pool according to ability; parents can watch from the café area or first-floor gallery.
Development is for children aged five and over who can already swim 15 metres unaided. It refines the four strokes, introduces aquatic sports, and teaches water survival and rescue through Bronze, Silver and Gold milestones. Half-hour groups are advertised between 4pm and 6pm, Monday–Friday. The distance requirement matters as well as the child’s age.
Academy is for children who can swim over 100 metres, developing personal targets, junior lifesaving and personal survival. The local groups are Tuesday 5–5.45pm and Wednesday 6–6.45pm. These specific groups are 45 minutes, despite the page’s general statement that lessons last 30 minutes weekly. Enrolment is open and pupils may join at any point subject to a suitable place; use the selected course’s actual confirmation for fee, duration and start arrangements.

Try gymnastics, diving or older-child gym time
The centre’s gymnastics follows British Gymnastics’ Rise framework, developing flexibility, balance and coordination. Discover Independent Child is for ages 3–5, with Monday 4.15–5pm or Saturday 9–9.45am groups. Explore is for ages 4–8, advertised Monday 5–5.45pm, Thursday 4.15–5pm or 5–5.45pm, and Saturday 9.45–10.30am. Explore Plus is for ages eight and over, Monday or Thursday 5.45–6.30pm or Saturday 10.30–11.15am.
The Young Adult gymnastics group starts at 12 years and meets Saturday 11.15am–noon. It welcomes beginners as well as those with experience; it is not a younger-child session. The page advertises gymnastics from £33.60 per month, not a universal level price or drop-in rate. Ask reception or use the course portal to confirm the full payment terms and the appropriate group. Registered parents can follow progress through the home portal.
Tom Daley Diving Academy is for ages 7–16 who can competently swim in deep water. Foundation teaches poolside basics; Beginner develops board skills; both are 30-minute levels. Improver uses higher boards and more complex techniques in 45 minutes. Local Monday and Thursday groups begin from 6.30pm. Confirm the suitable level, current place and complete fee before joining; enquiries go to lisnasharragh@gll.org.
Junior Gym is for ages 11–17 with an instructor present and a compulsory induction before the first session. The local overview advertises weekdays 3–5.30pm and weekends 10am–3pm, subject to the actual timetable. Ages 11–15 cannot use free weights; these are for 16–17-year-olds only. The junior tariff is £3 for Play & Pay and concession members, included for eligible prepaid members, with non-member admission shown as N/A.

Add stories, rhymes or a separate outdoor stop
Cregagh Library at 409–413 Cregagh Road offers a children’s books area, public and disabled toilets, baby changing, disabled access and parking. Normal hours are Monday 11am–8pm, Tuesday–Friday 10am–5pm and Saturday 10am–1pm; Sunday is closed. Libraries NI offers free access to books, Wi-Fi and events. Borrowing uses library membership; check current service notices and session arrangements before travelling.
Storytime is for ages 4–8, advertised Wednesdays 3.30–4pm. Rhythm and Rhyme is for parents with children aged 0–4, advertised Fridays 10.30–11am, with booking essential on the preceding Thursday. Contact 028 9040 1365 or cregagh.library@librariesni.org.uk for the particular session. These programme patterns are not promises of individually confirmed holiday dates.
Clonduff Drive playground is the council’s separate public children’s playground on Clonduff Drive, not a second facility inside the leisure centre. Use the council playground finder for the entrance, and check current weather/service notices. Do not apply the leisure centre’s opening hours or parking facilities to the playground.
For a swim, plan the full party’s admission and supervision before setting out: the tariff lists adult non-member admission at £5.80 and juniors aged 5–15 at £2.85, with other membership/concession rates and a refundable £1 locker deposit. The leisure centre’s café is part of that same visit, not an independent destination. The photograph shows the leisure centre main pool from its gallery; it does not depict the library or playground.
