Andersonstown with kids: swimming, slides and local play

In Andersonstown, a family outing can begin with a splash rather than a long journey. The leisure centre on Andersonstown Road brings a main pool, toddler water, Aqua Play and high-speed slides together, but each session has its own ticket and rules. Swim lessons offer a longer-term route from a baby’s first water confidence to advanced skills. Away from the pools, Glassmullin playground is a local outdoor stop, while St Agnes’ Youth Centre gives older children a place for arts, games and sport. Pick the activity for your child’s age and ability, then arrange the right booking or group before leaving home.

Choose the water session before packing the swim bag
Andersonstown Leisure Centre is at 132 Andersonstown Road, BT11 9BY. It is designed around family water activities, but a general swim, Family Fun Swim and Water Slides are different visits. Choose the one you want before paying; access to the building does not mean access to every attraction. The operator’s booking timetable is the place to check current sessions, especially during holidays when activity hours can change.
Family Fun Swim includes the Aqua Play structure, Little Lagoon toddler pool and main pool, without the three high-speed slides. Children can explore water jets, small slides, rope bridges and a tipping bucket; the toddler pool has a wide slide for adults and children together. Pre-book online or in the Better UK app. The advertised allowance is up to 50 minutes including changing, so arriving ready to swim helps.
The Aqua Play/Family Fun tariff is labelled Adult/Child: £6.60 non-member or £5.05 member, not a single flat price for a family. The play structure is described both as under 12 and up to age 12; confirm access for a 12-year-old before booking. Swim for All is a separate open-layout pool session. Its tariff lists adult non-member £5.80, adult PAYG member £4.60 and concession £2.25; juniors 5–15 are £2.85 non-member or £2.25 concession, while under-fives are free. The appropriate concession eligibility still applies.

Save the big slides for eligible, confident riders
The three high-speed slides are a different proposition from toddler water play. Riders can try a capsule drop, an inflatable-ring ride and a twisting body slide. They are not suitable for children under eight, and age alone is not enough: check height and weight as well. Pre-book a Water Slides session; it includes the slide rides, Aqua Play, Little Lagoon and main pool, with up to 70 minutes including changing.
Abyss and Vortex require at least 4ft height, a minimum single-rider weight of 7 stone and a maximum of 21 stone. Torrent requires at least 3ft 6in; riders below 7 stone must ride in pairs, with at most two people and 28 stone combined. Follow the attendant’s instructions and the full owner rules. Swimwear must not have exposed metal fastenings, and glasses need a securing strap.
Water Slides prices are adult £13.10 non-member or £10.15 member, junior £9.90 or £7.60, and a two-adult/two-child family ticket £39.40 or £30.30. An additional child is £6.35 in either category. Check the actual booking category for the whole party rather than assuming the swimming tariff applies to slides.

Find the lesson that fits age and swimming ability
The warmer teaching pool is used for the youngest lesson groups. Dippers is for babies aged 3–12 months, Splashers for 13–24 months, and Paddlers for 24–36 months, with a parent, grandparent or guardian accompanying the child. Dippers introduces water basics and shared time in the pool; Splashers builds confidence, and Paddlers lays foundations for independent swimming. The listed Wednesday and Friday groups are 9.30–10am, 10–10.30am and 10.30–11am respectively.
Pre-School lessons are for ages 3–5, building confidence and skills for safe solo swimming. Tuesday and Thursday groups are listed at 3–3.30pm. Foundation is the school-aged beginner path from age four, moving through Red, Amber and Green levels with safety, survival skills and an introduction to all four strokes. Non-swimmers start in the teaching pool, and parents can watch from the gallery or café.
Development is for children aged five and over who can already swim 15 metres unaided. It works on stroke technique, aquatic sports and survival and rescue skills. Academy is for children able to swim over 100 metres, with personal targets, junior lifesaving and personal survival; its advertised group is Thursday 6.15–7pm. Choose by ability as well as birthday. Confirm the current fee and available joining place through the owner’s Book Now route; a listed programme time is not a reservation.

Give older children and outdoor play their own plan
Glassmullin playground is the council’s local children’s play stop on Slievegallion Drive off Andersonstown Road, BT11 8JP. It is a straightforward outdoor alternative to a booked swim. Check weather and council service notices before setting off. The council issued a yellow-weather warning affecting some venues from 10am on 24 October to noon on 25 October 2026; confirm current conditions rather than treating a photograph as a weather report.
St Agnes’ Youth Centre at 4 South Green serves ages 8–25, including older primary children. Its activities and spaces include arts and crafts, games, cooking and baking, and sport such as football, basketball, dance and team-building. Family Support NI lists self-referral. Arrange joining, current charges and the appropriate age group with the centre before the first visit: this is a youth setting, not an all-day supervised visitor attraction.
Junior Gym at the leisure centre is for ages 11–17. A qualified instructor is present and an induction is compulsory before the first session. Under-16s cannot use the free-weights section. The £3 junior tariff is a concession rate; the general non-member and ordinary PAYG columns are marked N/A. Public monthly, PAYG and Flex junior memberships are described by Better, so confirm the applicable membership or concession and joining charges instead of expecting an unconditional £3 walk-in.

Keep supervision, access and travel simple
For ordinary swimming and water play, under-eights and non-swimmers under 16 need active supervision by a competent adult swimmer, with no more than two such children per adult. Under-eights and all non-swimmers must stay in shallow water. Buoyancy aids are strongly recommended. Plan the number of accompanying swimmers before booking, especially when children in the same family have different abilities.
The leisure centre lists wheelchair access, accessible parking, accessible toilets and changing, a lift, ramps and a poolside hoist. Speak to staff on arrival for hoist access, or discuss your requirements before travelling. The Little Bistro offers drinks and snacks with seating overlooking the teaching pool. Bring a £1 returnable coin or token for lockers.
The G1 Glider serves the centre. There is storage for ten bikes and free parking with ten disabled spaces. Building opening hours are not a promise that slides or toddler activities are operating, so check the selected session and its booking confirmation before departure. For a special holiday outing, use the current local calendar and the organiser’s booking information; lesson timetables are useful routines, not a reason to assume a dated holiday session is running.
