Townhill, Swansea with kids: library, play and community groups

Townhill’s family options gather around Powys Avenue: the Phoenix Centre combines Townhill Library with outdoor play, while Townhill Baptist Church runs toddler mornings, primary-age games and crafts, and children’s Sunday groups. Older children can also look at the Local People Project’s youth club at the Phoenix Centre. It is a neighbourhood for choosing a particular local stop rather than following a Swansea-wide list: plan around the library’s shorter hours, the age of each child and the actual date of a group.

Start around the Phoenix Centre
The Phoenix Centre is a community hub on Powys Avenue in Townhill, Swansea. Run by the Hill Community Development Trust, it serves Townhill, Mayhill and Gors Avenue, but the building itself is in Townhill. For a family visit, its useful combination is a library indoors and playground, Multi-Use Games Area and skatepark outside. You can build a short visit around the activity your child actually wants rather than treating the whole centre as one drop-in children’s session.
The centre advertises disabled access, accessible toilets and baby-changing facilities, with free on-site parking. Its general opening hours are Monday to Friday 8am–9pm and Saturday 8am–noon, with Sunday closed. Those hours do not mean the library or a particular club is open throughout. If you need an indoor facility during an outdoor visit, check the centre’s current opening before setting off.
The photograph shows the Phoenix Centre’s low-rise frontage, blue panels and entrance area, from its own website. It is a historical exterior photograph, not a picture of a current children’s session or a statement about today’s weather. For access questions contact 01792 479800 or bookings@hcdt.co.uk.

Make the library the quiet part of the visit
Townhill Library is inside the Phoenix Centre, making it a useful indoor destination on the same trip as outdoor play. The host’s branch page lists wheelchair access and a hearing loop, photocopying and scanning. Toilets are in the Phoenix Centre. Wi-fi is listed for library members only, so do not assume every service is available without joining.
The branch’s own opening pattern is shorter than the centre’s: Monday and Friday 9am–12.30pm and 1–5pm; Tuesday and Thursday 1–5pm; and Saturday 10am–noon. It is closed on Wednesday and Sunday. The lunchtime closure on Monday and Friday matters if you are planning to move straight indoors after a play stop.
For a specific children’s session, follow the current Townhill Library event calendar rather than guessing from the opening hours. A rhyme, craft or LEGO group needs its own current listing and attendance conditions. Choose the session first when that is the reason for travelling; for a quieter library stop, choose a time when the branch itself is open.

Add outdoor play without confusing it with pitch hire
The Phoenix Centre lists a children’s playground, Multi-Use Games Area and skatepark around the building. These are different ways to spend time outside: a playground stop is not the same activity as using a games area or a skatepark. Choose what suits your child, stay close enough to supervise and check the space when you arrive.
The separate all-weather pitch is a 2G floodlit sports facility with team-hire arrangements. The owner advertises weekday play with friends from 3.30–5pm, but it does not establish the child’s complete admission price on that description alone. If pitch use is your main plan, ask about current availability, junior eligibility and the full charge instead of assuming it is part of a playground visit.
Group hire has its own VAT, advance-payment and cancellation conditions. Those are different from the simple decision to visit the outdoor play area. Call the centre before organising a team booking, and keep a library visit as a separate stop within its real opening hours rather than relying on indoor access late in the day.

Choose toddler play or primary-age games at the church
Townhill Baptist Church is also on Powys Avenue, with its own programme and organisers. Townhill Toddlers welcomes children from birth to preschool age with their carers. The owner advertises Tuesdays 10–11.30am during term time, with playtime, craft, singing, refreshments and conversation. Attendance is free. Plan to stay with your little one.
Friday Fun Club is for children in Reception to Year 6, with games, crafts and Bible stories. Its regular pattern is 5–6pm on Fridays during term time. The church says its children’s activities are free and open to the community; leaders and helpers are DBS-checked and receive regular training. Ask about joining and collection arrangements before your child’s first visit.
The current owner pages explicitly advertise Townhill Toddlers on 3, 10 and 17 November 2026, and Friday Fun Club on 6, 13 and 20 November. Only 3 and 6 November fall in the 24 October–6 November planning fortnight. These are separate advertised sessions, not evidence that the groups run throughout half term. Use the particular session link for a date, and contact info@townhill.org.uk or 07311 949764 with questions.

Distinguish youth clubs from the all-age Sunday visit
The Local People Project’s youth club at the Phoenix Centre is advertised on Tuesdays 4.30–6.30pm for ages ten to sixteen. This gives older primary-age children a different option from preschool play. Ask the centre about joining, any charge and holiday changes. The weekly pattern is a programme description, not an individually confirmed holiday date.
Townhill Baptist Church’s Friday Youth Club is for Year 7 upwards, meeting 6.30–7.30pm on alternate Fridays during term time. The owner describes activities such as nerf nights, volleyball and tenpin bowling, plus food and a look at the Bible. It is free and open to the community. Confirm the next Friday and the particular meeting place, since an outing is not necessarily at the church.
For a family church visit, Sunday morning begins with all ages together for worship, prayer, a reading and a children’s talk. Children aged zero to thirteen, up to Year 8, then leave with leaders for creche or Sunday School and are brought back at the end. The creche includes toys, a short Bible story, activity, drink and snack; school-age children have age-appropriate Bible teaching and activity sheets.
The owner’s dated entries advertise 25 October and 1 November 2026 from 10.30am to noon. Follow that particular calendar entry for the planned end rather than treating the general description of an approximately hour-long service as a precise finish. The church welcomes everyone and lists free parking in front. Let it know about any questions or needs before a first visit.
