Totton with kids: wildlife, library play and family theatre

Totton puts nature, stories and family theatre within reach of a small local outing. Testwood Lakes offers wildlife walks and hands-on sessions, while the converted barn at Hanger Farm brings magic, science and under-fives music into the calendar. In the centre, Totton Library adds baby play, rhymes, stories and Saturday construction and games. Down at Eling Creek, the tide mill combines working machinery, an interactive Discovery Room and riverside walks. Choose one main stop, check its practical arrangements, and leave time for the change of pace between indoors and outdoors.

Start with a date, not a packed itinerary
Hanger Farm and Testwood Lakes both offer activities worth making the main event of a day. At the barn theatre, children can enjoy family magic, a science-and-illusion show or Boogie in the Barn. At the nature reserve, wildlife sessions and forest school bring stories, crafts and exploration outdoors. Open the individual dated listing for the time, age guidance and booking link.
A regular library group is a different kind of plan from a ticketed show or a six-week course. Pick the activity that fits your child, then add a short walk or café stop only if you want one. The calendar is the place to check current dates rather than assuming a normal weekday timetable applies through every holiday.
- Silly Scott’s Family Halloween Spooktacular
Join interactive magic with Jasper the friendly ghost and a Harry Potter-themed levitation.
- The Brain Bending Science Illusion Show
Explore optical illusions, tricks and mind-bending science with The Magical Mr West and Crowbert.
- Testwood Lakes Wildlife Tots
Listen to a story, explore wildlife outdoors and make something with natural materials.
Take a closer look at wildlife at Testwood Lakes
Testwood Lakes Nature Reserve on Brunel Road in Calmore offers lakes, wet woodland and grassland, with birds and other wildlife to look for along the way. A short walk with time to stop and notice things can be an outing in itself. Follow the reserve’s visitor guidance and dog restrictions; the organised children’s sessions have their own arrangements.
Wildlife Tots is aimed at ages 2–5, with younger and older children welcome too. Families listen to a story, explore outside and usually make something with natural materials. Wildlife Watch is for ages 5–15, with themed games, discovery and crafts. Children stay with an adult at both, and outdoor clothing and sturdy shoes matter more than a perfect forecast.
Forest School is a six-week course for ages 1½–5, with exploring, creating, learning new skills and cooking over a campfire. The £39 child price covers all six weeks; it is not a £6.50 drop-in ticket. For education-centre sessions, go past the first car park and follow the green signs. Nature Babies and Tots offers a separate pay-as-you-go option for under-fives.

Family theatre in a converted barn
Hanger Farm Arts Centre is an eighteenth-century converted barn with a theatre, café and exhibition gallery on Aikman Lane. It is part of Minstead Trust, with inclusive arts and work supporting people with learning disabilities. The photograph shows the exterior of the actual barn venue, not a performance.
For under-fives, Boogie in the Barn uses familiar songs and music from different cultures, instruments, ribbons, parachutes and bubbles. Children can clap, tap, sway and twirl, with first-child and second-child tickets priced separately. Choose the advertised date through the venue rather than arriving for an unbooked play session.
Family shows range from Silly Scott’s interactive Halloween magic to The Magical Mr West’s optical illusions and brain-bending science. Silly Scott’s organiser specifically describes a gentle show without strobe lighting, smoke machines, loud bangs or scary noises. Check each performance on its own merits: the setting and ticket arrangements are not interchangeable.

Make time for books, play and building
Totton Library is on Library Road, around seven minutes on foot from the railway station and close to Shopping Centre bus stop L. The building is on one accessible floor, with a hearing loop, Wi-Fi and public computers. It opens Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday 09:30–17:00 and Friday 09:30–13:30, closing Wednesday, Sunday and public holidays.
Baby Play on Thursday afternoons is for under-ones. Under-fives can join Monday and Thursday Rhymetime or Monday Stay and Play, while Tuesday Storytime is for ages 3–5. A shared book or a few songs may be plenty for a small child; there is no need to turn the visit into a long day.
Saturday Family Fun combines construction and family board games. Construction Club runs 10:00–12:00 within the wider 10:00–16:00 family session. Older readers aged 8–12 can try Kids Bookabout on first and third Thursdays after school until 16:30, with no booking necessary.

Watch water power at Eling Creek
The Eling Tide Mill Experience brings together a historic tide mill, interactive Discovery Room, visitor centre, café and riverside walks. Children can see how tidal water powers machinery and explore the story of the mill; the walks offer a different pace afterwards.
Winter opening separates the spaces: the café and Discovery Room open Wednesday–Sunday 09:30–16:00, while the tide mill opens at weekends 11:00–16:00. Milling itself depends on low water, so check the owner’s milling updates before travelling. Café and walks have free entry; admission to the mill and Discovery Room is charged, with family tickets available.
The owner reports that the autumn road repairs were completed and the mill reopened from the weekend of 3 October. Keep an eye on those updates before a visit. There is a free car park across the toll bridge by the cemetery and church, with alternative parking by the Eling public slipway.

Choose a sensory course for your baby’s stage
Adventure Babies at Totton and Eling Community Centre brings stories to life through sensory and messy play, music, movement, props and bubbles. Tiny Adventurers is the gentler option for babies aged 0–12 months; Mini Adventurers is for ages six months–two years and recommends that babies can sit independently, without requiring crawling or walking.
The winter course costs £48 for six weeks, with Wednesday options at 10:00–10:45 and 11:15–12:00. There is free on-site parking and space for buggies. Book the appropriate course and check the organiser’s current details rather than assuming each date is sold as a drop-in.
- Adventure Babies: Tiny Adventurers
Bring stories to life through sensory play, music, movement, props and bubbles.
- Adventure Babies: Mini Adventurers
Bring stories to life through sensory play, music, movement, props and bubbles.
Keep one clear plan
Bring outdoor layers and footwear for Testwood, allow for ticket choices at Hanger Farm and check the mill’s low-water timetable if machinery is the reason for your visit. One activity with a little room either side is often easier than moving between several venues.
