Camberwell with children: books, swimming and family art

Camberwell makes it easy to mix a short outdoor stop with something more absorbing indoors. Around the Green, the library offers books, songs and early-years groups; the historic leisure centre adds swimming lessons for babies, preschoolers and older children. Along Peckham Road, South London Gallery brings free contemporary art, hands-on family workshops and a weekend garden trail. Choose one main activity, then leave room for a wander through a small local garden rather than trying to cover every corner in one visit.

Start with books and a library activity
Camberwell Library at 48 Camberwell Green is a practical starting point for a books-and-activity visit. Choose from books for reference and loan, including a Polish collection, then match the children’s programme to your child’s age. The library has flat access, lifts to all floors and accessible toilets.
For ages 0–4, Baby and Toddler sessions are advertised on Mondays in term time, 11:00–12:00; Bookstart runs on Tuesdays in term time, 10:00–11:00; and Rhymetime is on Fridays in term time, 11:00–11:30. Saturday Kids Club offers arts and crafts from 14:00–15:00, also explicitly listed by the council for ages 0–4.
Older children have a different option: STEM, coding and robotics for ages 7–18, Thursdays in term time from 18:15–19:15. General library opening hours are Monday–Friday 09:00–20:00, Saturday 09:00–17:00 and Sunday 12:00–16:00. Those building hours do not replace the individual activity times.

Choose the right lesson at the historic baths
Camberwell Leisure Centre on Artichoke Place retains the character of its historic swimming baths. There is a 25-metre main pool and a separate teaching pool with graduated steps for beginners and younger swimmers. The operator states that swimming lessons and pool sessions resume as normal from Monday 19 October 2026.
Adult and Child lessons start from four months, with parents or carers joining in the water for songs, games and gentle learning. Duckling Awards are for children aged three and over who are ready for more independence. Junior Swim School starts at five and follows the seven stages of the Swim England Learn to Swim programme.
Select Camberwell and the appropriate stage in the enrolment service, then check the current course fee and timetable. The centre’s general hours are Monday–Friday 06:30–22:00, Saturday 07:00–18:00 and Sunday 07:00–22:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Book a specific swim session rather than treating those as unrestricted pool-access hours.

Make art together at South London Gallery
South London Gallery sits on the Camberwell–Peckham boundary, with its main building at 65–67 Peckham Road and a Fire Station annexe across the road. It is free to visit. The galleries open Wednesday 12:00–21:00 and Thursday–Sunday 12:00–18:00, and are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Visitors under 12 need a responsible adult.
Family Space gives ages 5–12 and their parents or carers a relaxed way to create together in the Clore Studio. Artist Sadie St Hilaire leads the September–November 2026 residency, exploring storytelling and world-building. The explicitly advertised next session is 31 October 2026, 11:00–13:00; use the current calendar for subsequent dates.
The workshop is free, with donations welcome. No booking is required: drop in at your own pace, on a first-come, first-served basis, and allow for a possible wait at busy times. Optional advance registration saves time, but each adult and child must be registered individually. The room may be noisy; sensory materials, ear plugs, ear defenders, magnifying glasses and wheelchairs are available.

Try the free weekend garden trail
The gallery’s self-guided Children’s Garden Trail uses a free worksheet to help families look closely at plants and sculptural spaces in the Orozco Garden. Designed by artist Gabriel Orozco, the garden becomes a setting for creative prompts rather than a conventional playground. The trail is aimed at ages 5–12 and is available Saturdays and Sundays, 12:00–18:00.
The garden has several levels and steps, with a fully accessible ground level and accessible toilets. Ask a Gallery Assistant if you need a seat, or contact mail@southlondongallery.org about access requirements. Keep the weekend garden hours separate from the gallery’s longer Wednesday opening.

Add a small green-space stop
Camberwell Green offers a short outdoor pause close to the library, at the busy crossroads in the centre of the neighbourhood. It is a small area of common land with a long history of fairs and local events; check actual event listings rather than assuming a fair is taking place.
Along Peckham Road, Lucas Gardens is a small Victorian park opposite Southwark Town Hall. St Giles’ Churchyard offers formal gardens behind the church, including historic gravestones. These are options for a gentle walk or change of pace, not substitutes for a booked lesson or children’s workshop.
For an easy plan, choose the library or swimming as the main activity around central Camberwell, or make the gallery and its garden your destination on Peckham Road. Match the plan to the actual session time, your child’s age and any access needs, then add a smaller outdoor stop if there is still energy to spare.
