Bedminster with kids: city-farm animals, library crafts and theatre

Bedminster offers a useful mix of free indoor activities, creative classes and green space close to busy local streets. At Windmill Hill City Farm, children can meet animals, explore gardens and play, with a café for a pause afterwards. Bedminster Library brings stories, rhymes, Lego and seasonal crafts into the week, while acta makes room for original community theatre and playful baby sensory sessions. Start with the dated calendar for a particular day, or choose a farm visit or a regular group that suits your child’s age and energy.

Find one activity for the day
For a weekend or holiday plan, start with the Bedminster calendar. The library offers free Lego and seasonal creative events, the farm hosts visiting performers and workshops, and acta brings original community theatre to Gladstone Street. Open the exact activity for its age guidance, time and practical arrangements.
Free entry to Windmill Hill City Farm does not mean that every workshop or visiting show is free. Equally, a regular class timetable is not a promise of a holiday session. Choose one thing your child wants to do and leave some room to settle in rather than filling every hour.

- Monster Diaries at Bedminster Library

- Halloween Craft at Bedminster Library

A free farm visit with room to slow down
Windmill Hill City Farm is a 4.5-acre community farm on Philip Street, with animals, gardens, children’s play areas and picnic spots. Farm and gardens open seven days a week 09:00–17:00, apart from a short Christmas closure. Entry is free and donations support the charity. The guide photograph shows cattle and adults at the farm, not a children’s session or unrestricted access to an animal pen.
There is a café for a warm-up or lunch, normally open 09:00–16:30, plus shops and other community spaces. Some paths may be muddy after rain. The visitor centre is staffed Monday–Friday, so check any specific access question ahead of time rather than relying on a weekend desk being open.
A short wander to see animals and gardens can be enough. If you also want a show or workshop, read the separate booking terms and leave time to find the right space within the site.

Build, listen and make at Bedminster Library
Bedminster Library is on Bedminster Parade. It has good wheelchair access, Wi-Fi, public computers and a Breastfeeding Welcome policy. It opens Monday and Wednesday 10:00–19:00 and Thursday–Saturday 10:00–17:00, closing Tuesday and Sunday. Computers switch off 15 minutes before closing, and short-notice changes are posted on the branch’s social pages.
Lego Club welcomes children aged four and over with their parents and carers on Saturdays 11:30–12:30. Friendly volunteers help make it a relaxed opportunity to build and play. It is free, with no booking needed.
Seasonal activities give older children another reason to visit. Monster Diaries invites them to design a monster, make a hat and try puzzles, while the Halloween craft session offers paper witches’ hats and spooky colouring. Adults stay with children; check the exact dated listing for the time and age guidance.
For younger children, the council lists free term-time Rhyme and Storytime on Wednesday at 14:00 and Thursday and Friday at 11:00, for ages 0–3 with older siblings welcome. Saturday 11:00 Storytime is for ages 1–4. Ask the branch about holiday arrangements before setting off for a regular group.

Choose how your child likes to make things
The farm’s After-school Farm Club is for ages 6–11 and combines a snack, animal feeding, nature or craft activities and play. It meets on term-time Wednesdays 15:45–17:15. The first trial is free; email the organiser to book and ask about the ongoing charge rather than treating the whole club as free.
Cygnets Art School teaches drawing, painting and sculpture through step-by-step projects, for all abilities aged 5–12. The farm lists term-time dates, but times vary: use the booking page for the actual class and fees.
Glazed and Confused offers a different kind of creative session: choose a ceramic piece and paint it during a two-hour pop-up at the Barn Terrace. The organiser glazes and fires it, normally ready to collect around two weeks later. Children are welcome, with a grown-up for under-16s. Book the dated slot and piece; the price depends on what you choose, and collecting the finished work usually involves a return visit.

Puppets and community theatre
Mr Brown’s Pig brings glove and rod puppets, music, comedy and audience participation to the farm. Its spooky edition has no age restriction, but the organiser warns that creepy characters may upset sensitive little ones. Bring blankets for cosy seating and dress for the weather.
acta Community Theatre on Gladstone Street makes and shares original work with people from different backgrounds. Ocean of Dark, created by its Young Carers, is a sea-faring story of pirates, mermaids, vampires and a powerful sapphire. It is described as spooky and dark horror, with some laughter; consider that tone when choosing it for your child. The linked booking page states no age restrictions. Tickets are free and booking ahead is requested, with donations welcome.
The farm also advertises free weekday children’s films in its café during winter at 15:45, with previous titles including The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom. The film is free and refreshments are extra. Check the café’s current announcement for your visit rather than assuming a particular title.

A playful morning for babies and grown-ups
Babbers at acta combines storytelling, theatre, singing, silliness and sensory activity for ages 0–1. Sessions also include a moment for adults to unwind and meet other parents or carers, with the theatre café open afterwards for participants.
The current organiser-linked information describes two identical Monday options, 10:00–10:45 and 11:00–11:45, during the advertised term. Term booking works out at £9 per session; £12 drop-in places are released nearer the time if there is room. Follow the current Headfirst page for availability, as a regular timetable alone does not guarantee a ticket.
- Babbers at acta
Share playful storytelling, theatre, singing and sensory adventures with your baby.
A manageable Bedminster outing
A farm wander, a library craft or one performance can each be the main plan. Check the child’s age, whether an adult stays, and the actual booking conditions before travelling. Leave the next stop optional: time for a snack, a nappy change or another look at the animals can matter more than covering every place on a list.
