Northfield with children: playgrounds, books and local groups

Northfield makes it possible to combine a town-centre errand with a proper break for children. Victoria Common sits behind the shopping centre, with two playgrounds, an orchard and paths for a change of pace, while the library on Church Road gives you somewhere to choose books together. For a planned outing, look to the leisure centre’s swimming lessons, the Baptist church’s preschool stay-and-play or family activities around St Laurence. Check the current calendar for separately advertised holiday events rather than assuming that term-time groups continue through the break.

Start with Victoria Common
Victoria Common is the natural place to add outdoor time to a Northfield trip. Its two playgrounds, picnic area and circular paths offer several ways to spend an unhurried visit; the community orchard and wildlife area give children something different to look for as you walk.
The main entrance and car park are on Church Road. There are also pedestrian entrances from the shopping centre, St Lawrence Road and Heath Road South. Plan toilet stops at the shopping centre: the council identifies those nearby facilities rather than toilets inside the park.

Pair a park visit with library books
Northfield Library is at 77 Church Road, close to the Common. Choosing a few books can make a useful indoor change of scene, especially when you want a shorter outing rather than a whole-day attraction.
The branch closes from 1pm to 2pm on every open day and is closed on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Check the council’s branch and temporary-closure information before travelling; don’t plan a lunchtime stop simply from the day’s headline opening hours.

Make a regular plan for little ones
Babies, Tots and Me at Northfield Baptist Church combines toys, craft, music and company for carers. It welcomes newborns through to children starting school, meets on Thursday mornings in term time and charges £2.50 per week including a child’s snack and an adult hot drink.
For another kind of play session, Slide Away Castles at St Laurence Pastoral Centre brings inflatables and toys together with a snack and singing. Book the appropriate age ticket: babies, older children and siblings have different charges, and the free under-six-months option only applies with a booked older sibling. Seasonal Halloween sessions have a different price list from the regular November group.

Book swimming rather than guessing the pool timetable
Northfield Leisure Centre has family swimming and a children’s swim school. A free introductory taster is offered for lessons, but it is not a free ongoing course. Check the operator’s timetable and booking arrangements for the activity you want.
General centre opening hours are not the same as family-swim availability. The operator lists accessible changing, lifts and step-free pool access; ask the centre about the support your family needs when booking.

Leave room for genuinely dated local events
There are specific Halloween options to check in Northfield’s current calendar: Slide Away Castles advertises a two-hour UV disco for ages four to ten, and a separate younger-children’s stay-and-play with spooky inflatables and a photo backdrop. Both are at St Laurence Pastoral Centre. The disco charges for adults as well as children, with a family ticket for the specified four-person combinations.
St Laurence’s Sunday School is Christian faith-based, using stories, play and creative activities, and requires advance registration. Follow the current activity links for the advertised dates and booking terms; term-time groups and seasonal events are not interchangeable.
KSW’s Halloween wrestling at the Quarry Club is advertised as family entertainment, but includes theatrical scares and a casket match. Choose it with your own child’s comfort in mind, and book through the organiser’s TicketSource page.
