Erdington with kids: Rookery Park and welcoming High Street stops

Arched interior and blue stained-glass window in St Barnabas Church, Erdington
St Barnabas Church Centre, Erdington

Erdington works well for a short family outing built around Rookery Park and a High Street stop. The park brings playground time, ball courts and tree-lined paths; St Barnabas adds a free term-time preschool group and public community occasions, while OIKOS offers a café base nearby. Plan library visits carefully: the main Erdington Library building is closed, with a temporary Book Pick and Drop service rather than ordinary browsing. Choose one main activity and check its actual timetable before adding the next.

Start outside at Rookery Park

Rookery Park is a useful outdoor anchor near the High Street. Its children’s playground sits alongside football, tennis, basketball and netball facilities, with benches and tree-lined paths when children need a slower pace. The council describes a two-kilometre perimeter route, but there is no need to complete it to make a worthwhile visit.

Entrances are on Kingsbury Road, Wood End Road and Western Road, with parking off Western Road. There are no public toilets in the park, so include a separate toilet plan. Rookery House is now a private residence: enjoy the surrounding park and formal-garden setting without treating the house as an attraction you can enter.

A playground, ball courts and tree-lined paths a short walk from Erdington High Street.

Make a term-time morning about play

Barny Babies at St Barnabas Community Hub is for children aged 0–5 with a parent or carer. Toys and activities, interactive songs and stories, a children’s snack and a grown-up’s cuppa make it a sociable preschool option. The advertised session is Monday, 11am–12:30pm, and attendance is free.

It is explicitly school-term-time only. A Monday during the school holidays is not a confirmed session, even when the normal timetable still appears online. Check the current group arrangements before travelling. The hub is part of the church centre on the High Street; its community activities and worship have their own purposes and timetables.

  • St Barnabas Community Hub

A welcoming High Street community space with a free preschool play group and public activities.

  • Barny Babies

Toys, songs, stories and a snack for preschool children, with a cuppa and company for their grown-ups.

Use OIKOS as a pause, not an assumed play session

OIKOS Café at 58 High Street is a not-for-profit community enterprise, open Monday–Saturday, 9am–4pm. It offers a welcoming place to sit, meet someone and buy a drink or food between activities. The café closes on Sunday, when the church has separate arrangements.

The NHS stay-and-play directory lists Mothers Meet at this address for ages 0–5 on Wednesday, 10am–noon. Confirm current operation, holiday arrangements, booking and any fees with the group; an ordinary café visit is not the same as attending the play session. The directory also lists Six Ways Mini Stars at Six Ways Baptist Church on Wood End Road, Mondays 9–11am for ages 0–5. Contact the group before planning around that weekly listing.

  • OIKOS Café

A not-for-profit community café for a cuppa or meal between High Street activities.

  • Mothers Meet at OIKOS

A stay-and-play contact for families with children aged 0–5 at the High Street café.

  • Six Ways Mini Stars

An early-years stay-and-play group for children aged 0–5 on Wood End Road.

Know what the temporary library service can do

Erdington Library’s main building is closed for health and safety reasons. The Community Room at the side provides a temporary Book Pick and Drop service on Tuesday and Friday, 9am–1pm and 2–5pm. It is a practical way to collect reservations or return family loans, not an indoor browsing destination or a promised children’s activity room.

The council separately advertises mobile-library visits to the High Street; use that service’s actual timetable. For the fixed library service, check temporary notices and use the side-room access. Nearby pay-and-display car parks include Hart Road and Orphanage Road, Machin Road and Church Road.

Choose the actual dated community invitation

St Barnabas advertises a bring-and-share lunch on Sunday 25 October 2026 at noon, after its 10:30am service. Everyone is invited, with something to share if they are able. It is a church community lunch with children attending alongside their grown-ups, not a separately staffed children’s workshop.

Later in the season, its Christmas Arts & Crafts Fayre is on 5 December 2026, 11am–3pm, with stalls in the main church and refreshments in the Community Hub. Goods and refreshments are purchases. The published table-hire price is for stallholders and must not be mistaken for a visitor ticket. Check the current calendar and organiser notices for any changes before travelling.
