Bishopston with children: stories, board games and hands-on science

Bishopston’s Gloucester Road makes a compact indoor family outing: choose books and stories at Bishopston Library, or settle around a board game at Chance & Counters with staff to explain the rules. School holidays bring a different pace at Fun Science’s scout-hut clubs on St Bartholomew’s Road, where children try hands-on experiments. A short library visit, a shared café game and a full childcare day suit different ages and plans, so start with the activity rather than trying to combine everything.

Make the library your short indoor stop

Bishopston Library on Gloucester Road is a useful starting point for books, stories and family activities. Level entry, automatic doors, a lift to the first floor, an accessible toilet and a hearing loop are listed by the council. It normally opens Monday afternoon and Wednesday to Saturday, but not Tuesday or Sunday.

For a shared session, choose the dated story or chess listing. Chess is for ages 5–17 and children need an accompanying adult. A family library session is a different plan from simply browsing the shelves.

Let someone else explain the game

Chance & Counters at 79–81 Gloucester Road has hundreds of board games and staff who recommend a game for your group and teach the rules. The café’s published opening time is noon, with food and drink available alongside paid gaming. Walk-ins are welcome, though a booking is useful at busy times.

Off-peak gaming is £2.50 per person per hour and peak gaming £3.50. The page’s visit-planning table limits free play for children aged 14 and under to off-peak, while its FAQ is less specific: confirm the child charge before paying for a peak-time table. Ask staff for help with the entrance step if you need wheelchair access.

Choose a full holiday-club day for hands-on experiments

Fun Science’s Bishopston holiday club uses Scout Hut 6388 on St Bartholomew’s Road. Children aged 4–10 explore themed science through practical activities. The October programme includes biology, chemistry and physics days; use the current listings for the exact dates rather than assuming a weekly class.

A standard day runs 10:00–15:00. The first-child fee is £34 for one day or £90 for all three October days, with lower sibling fees. Optional extra-care hours have a separate charge and need advance booking. Children must manage toileting and changing independently, and the organiser cannot offer 1:1 care. Discuss individual needs before booking. The photograph is the organiser’s activity image, not a record of a visit to this club.

Match the outing to the time you have

Choose the library for a small visit, a board-game table when you want to play together, or a science club when you need a booked childcare day. The science hut and Gloucester Road venues are separate destinations; check the address and adult-supervision arrangements for the activity you choose.
