Belvoir with kids: sport, theatre and community groups

Belvoir Players / Belvoir Studio Theatre

Belvoir is a compact Belfast estate with a useful mix of indoor sport, children’s groups and live theatre. Belvoir Activity Centre gives families bookable racquet games and a gymnastics pathway from age three, while the parish church offers a toddler-and-carer group and school-stage Sunday activities. At Belvoir Studio Theatre, children can train with the academy or watch a family production. Make the plan around the specific activity: racquet admission is per player, pitch hire needs advance booking, and a theatre ticket belongs to one performance. Belvoir Drive playground is currently listed as closed for maintenance, so do not build an outdoor stop around it.

Start with an indoor game you can play together

Belvoir Activity Centre on Belvoir Drive is the estate’s fitness and family hub. Its sports hall and multi-purpose studio provide a practical indoor base, with an outdoor multi-use games area for suitable weather. Badminton is advertised for all ages and abilities; table tennis is explicitly for adults and children. Staff set the table up in the sports hall or minor hall and direct you on arrival. Pickleball mixes racquet skills in a game the owner describes as suitable for all ages and abilities.

Book the right space. Indoor pickleball bookings must say Sports Hall 1; outdoor pickleball bookings must say Muga Pitch 1. Racquet admission is per person playing, not one charge for the whole court. The current badminton, pickleball and table-tennis rates are £8.15 for non-members, £6.30 Pay as you go and £3.05 concession/junior. Members have one hour’s play per day included. Equipment is free to hire, but that does not make admission free. Optional discounted Pay as you Go membership is £12.50 annually for Belfast residents or £18.75 for non-residents.

A free online account is needed to book, not paid membership. Members can book seven days ahead, with other activities released from 10pm; non-members have a five-day window, subject to programming and availability. Guests can pay at reception. Take a 20p coin if using a locker. The centre lists wheelchair adaptation, an accessible toilet and changing, fifty free parking spaces including four disabled spaces, storage for eight bikes and Metro 6c/6d buses.

Match a structured activity to the child’s stage

Belvoir’s gymnastics follows the British Gymnastics Rise framework. Discover Independent Child starts at three-plus, with a Wednesday 2.30–3.15pm pattern. Explore starts at four-plus, on Mondays 4–5pm and Wednesdays 3.15–4.15pm. Higher-level Explore Plus requires pathway criteria, while Excel is invitation-only. Think of these as a progression in balance, flexibility and coordination, not interchangeable drop-in classes. Ask reception to match the level to the child and confirm the full applicable charge: the advertised starting price is £33.60 per month, not per lesson.

Junior Gym is a different option for eleven-to-seventeen-year-olds. A compulsory instructor-led induction comes before the first booked session, and the local junior timetable controls access. Eleven-to-fifteen-year-olds cannot use free weights. The £3 junior entry appears in the concession column, with non-member and Pay as you go columns N/A; ask about the correct account arrangement rather than assuming a universal casual price.

For children who would rather sing, dance and perform, Belvoir Players Theatre Academy at 94 Belvoir Drive trains ages six to eighteen in its own theatre. Acting through performance, singing, dance and teamwork belong to one academy programme, with age-stream productions and members developing at their own pace. Contact the academy about joining, timetable and charges. Buying a ticket to watch a show is a separate transaction from enrolling a child.

Choose a parish group with the right school-stage fit

Belvoir Parish Church is at 21 Dunseverick Avenue, just off the A55 at the entrance to the estate. Its Sunday 11am service welcomes newcomers and usually lasts about an hour. Babies and children can stay in church, and a crèche area in the family centre streams the service if a family needs to step out. There is a front entrance and a side family-centre entrance from the car park. A collection is taken, but visitors are explicitly welcome to pass the plate on.

Ramblers is for preschool children through P5, with music, Bible stories, crafts and games after roughly the first ten minutes of worship. The Expedition is the P6–P7 group. Base Camp is for school years eight to ten and combines pancakes, conversation and Christian faith exploration. Once a month, All-in Sunday brings all ages together instead. The school stage matters, especially around the transition to secondary school; these are church groups rather than general drop-off childcare.

Kit’s Place is the toddlers-and-carers group, advertised on Tuesdays at 10am. The Sunday-evening youth provision invites year eight and above to the stage lounge at 7pm for a meal and conversation. Contact office@belvoirparish.co.uk or 028 9013 4774 for first-visit arrangements, current charges where applicable and holiday operation. The office lists Tuesday–Thursday 10am–2pm and Friday 10am–1pm. Do not assume a regular group pattern proves a particular half-term meeting.

Make a live show a specific booked outing

Belvoir Studio Theatre is explicitly in the Belvoir estate, at 94 Belvoir Drive. The main hall can seat two hundred, with retractable seating and different configurations for productions and cabaret. Choose the show and its performance time rather than treating the theatre as an open play attraction. The guide photograph shows an earlier wrestling-ring setup inside this theatre; it is not a picture of the current programme or of Belvoir Activity Centre.

Rev21’s gospel-jazz cabaret is advertised on 30 October 2026 at 7.30–10pm, doors 7pm, at £21.38 per ticket including booking fee. TEN, NISMAT’s ten-year musical-theatre celebration, runs on 6 and 7 November at 7.30–10pm, doors 7pm, at £16.04 including fee. The booking pages list a typical age range of one-plus; families should still consider the late finishing time and production content. These are two different shows, not a continuous Halloween programme. Choose the performance that works for the family and allow for the late finish.

Later in the year, NISMAT’s Home Alone 2 musical has performances on 24–28 November, including a Saturday matinee from 3–5.15pm. Ask the theatre about evening finishing times. Adults cost £19.24 and concessions £16.04 including booking fees. Cinderella has individually advertised December performances, with adults £21.38 and concessions £16.04 including fee. Confirm concession eligibility with the theatre rather than treating it as a universal child rate. Book a particular performance, note its online-sales cutoff, and use the current listings for dates and availability rather than a general production range.

Plan ball games in advance, and respect the playground closure

For a family or group that wants football or basketball, Belvoir Activity Centre offers sports-hall hire at £28.70 per hour for adults and £14.35 for juniors. Its outdoor MUGA is £11 per hour for adults or £5.50 for juniors. These are facility-hire charges, not per-child coaching fees. Organise the group, confirm the appropriate booking category and choose indoors or outdoors to suit the plan. The pickleball page has its own per-player admission rule, so do not apply football’s hourly pitch price to a racquet booking.

The separate Belvoir playing pitches and recreation centre at 108 Belvoir Drive belongs to the Boys’ Brigade Belfast. The owner identifies the site as Belvoir and permits both Brigade groups and the general public to use its eleven-a-side, seven-a-side and floodlit 3G pitches by advance booking. Ask info@belfastbb.org.uk or 028 9032 4853 for the full hire charge and conditions, and get the booking confirmed. This is not the same destination as Better’s activity centre or a freely accessible playground.

Belfast City Council currently marks Belvoir Drive playground, BT8 7EG, closed for maintenance. No reopening date is supplied, so leave it out of a promised play stop until the council changes that notice. For the indoor alternatives, check the chosen activity’s opening and booking arrangements before setting off.
