Peckham with children: parks, books, swimming and creative play

Copeland Park

Peckham gives families two quite different starting points: books, songs and indoor play around Peckham Library and Peckham Pulse, or a longer outdoor outing on Peckham Rye Park and Common. Smaller neighbourhood playgrounds offer quick stops between plans, while Copeland Park brings a creative strand through exhibitions and hands-on art. For a regular activity, compare early-years library groups with swimming lessons at the Pulse and Mountview’s termly performing-arts programme. Choose the activity that fits your child’s age and energy, then check its booking and term arrangements.

A longer outdoor outing on Peckham Rye

Peckham Rye Park and Common gives a family outing room to change pace. The Victorian park has woodland, a lake, streams and ornamental gardens, while the Common offers open space beyond it. Explore Sexby Gardens and the Japanese Garden, or make playground time the main event.

The council lists an adventure playground, a dog-free arboretum with picnic space, and toilets and baby-changing facilities near Strakers Road and the Adventure Playground. The park opens at 07:30 and closes at seasonally varying times; the Common is open at all hours. Entrances are on Peckham Rye, Homestall Road, Colyton Road and Strakers Road. Sports pitches need booking, and the School Nature Garden is a learning space rather than an unrestricted family attraction.

Smaller play stops around the neighbourhood

For a shorter outdoor break, Leyton Square on Peckham Park Road has a children’s play area and outdoor gym. Cossall Park is tucked behind Queen’s Road, with another small children’s play area. Sumner Park on Sumner Road adds a boardwalk to its neighbourhood playground.

Warwick Gardens on Lyndhurst Way pairs a family play area with a five-a-side football pitch for an informal kickabout. Bird in Bush Park offers an orchard and sensory garden, alongside a playground for older children. Its BMX track has organised sessions: check the actual arrangements if coached riding is the reason for your visit.

Songs, books and games at Peckham Library

Peckham Library, at 122 Peckham Hill Street, is a useful indoor starting point. Browse and borrow books, or choose a children’s activity. The building has flat access, lifts to all floors and pods, and accessible toilets; staff on the ground and fourth floors can help with the lift.

Ages 0–4 can join Rhymetime, advertised on Mondays in term time at 14:00–14:30 and Fridays at 10:30–11:00. The Baby and Toddler session runs on Tuesdays in term time, 11:00–12:00; Bookstart is advertised on Wednesdays in term time, 10:00–11:30.

For ages 7–11, Chatterbooks meets on the second Tuesday of each month in term time, 16:00–17:00. Saturday craft and colouring runs 14:00–15:00. Family Games Zone welcomes all ages on the second Thursday each month, 16:00–18:00, for board and card games including draughts, Ludo and Tic-Tac-Toe. Book Games Zone in the library or email libraries@southwark.gov.uk.

The library opens 09:00–20:00 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10:00–20:00 on Wednesday, 10:00–17:00 on Saturday and 12:00–16:00 on Sunday. Check term-time activity arrangements separately from general building hours.

Indoor play and swimming at the Pulse

Peckham Pulse at 10 Melon Road offers a different sort of indoor plan. Its soft-play area has slides, ball pits and space to climb, for children up to eight. Pre-book and stay to supervise: it is not a drop-off activity.

The centre has a 25-metre main pool and a warm hydrotherapy pool used for learning, disability sessions, rehabilitation and family swims. Choose an actual pool session and check its supervision rules rather than relying on general centre opening hours.

The operator’s swimming lessons begin with Adult and Child from four months, with a parent or carer in the water. Ducklings is for children aged three and over ready for greater independence; Junior Swim School starts at five and follows seven Swim England Learn to Swim stages. Select Peckham Pulse and the correct level when enrolling, then check the current fee and timetable.

Creative time at Copeland Park and the Bussey Building

Copeland Park at 133 Copeland Road brings galleries and creative businesses into the neighbourhood’s family options. Its programme includes separately advertised family-friendly events; use the current listings to choose one rather than assuming every exhibition or workshop has the same audience.

Imperfect Art’s half-term camp at Unit D2.1 in the Bussey Building is for ages 8–12, with paint, clay, tie-dye, felt and acrylic alongside free-choice project stations. Half days cost £35 and full days £60. Drop-off is 09:30–10:00; half-day collection is 12:30–13:00 and a full day ends at 15:30. Contact Linda on 07830 303084 or linda@imperfectart.co.uk for current camp dates, availability and any applicable sibling or full-week discount.

For dated exhibitions and activities, check the neighbourhood calendar and the organiser’s programme before setting off. Festival opening hours are not the same as an individual children’s workshop time.

A termly performing-arts option

Generation Next at Mountview, 120 Peckham Hill Street, offers ten-week Saturday workshops for ages 6–18. Acting, Ballet, Hip-Hop, Musical Theatre and Tae Kwon Do give different ways to build skills and confidence; beginners are welcome, with no audition.

Autumn 2026 registration is closed. Spring term registration opens on 28 November 2026. Fees are for a ten-week term, not a casual drop-in: Ballet, Hip-Hop and Tae Kwon Do cost £60; Acting costs £60 for ages 6–8 and £110 for older groups; Musical Theatre costs £150. Limited means-tested bursaries have Southwark residence, schooling and income conditions. Bursary approval does not itself register a child.

Register each child separately, discuss access needs when applying, and bring water and comfortable clothes. For longer or multiple workshops, bring snacks. More than 15 minutes late means no entry, and leaving the term early does not remove the full fee.

Choose one main activity, then add a smaller stop

For a books-and-play visit, start around the library and Pulse and book anything that needs a place. For more outdoor time, make Peckham Rye the destination rather than a quick extra. Smaller parks work well as local alternatives when a full park outing is too much.

A library programme, a ten-week course and a dated festival answer different questions. Use current listings for actual event dates, the appropriate lesson stage and complete booking conditions.
