Allerton with kids: books, gardens and a little music

Stone arches and wooden pews face a stained-glass window inside All Hallows, Allerton.
All Hallows, Allerton

Allerton offers a quieter Liverpool family day built around books, gardens and small-group activities rather than a single big attraction. Allerton Library gives you an indoor starting point; the old estate landscape at Allerton Towers brings a change of pace outdoors. Around Mather Avenue, Allerton URC hosts toddler play and music sessions, while All Hallows opens its doors for a short look at its stained glass. Older music fans can plan further ahead for the National Trust’s visit to Paul McCartney’s childhood home — but that requires a booked minibus tour, not a spontaneous knock at the door.

Begin with a book stop

Allerton Library is a practical anchor for an unhurried local outing: choose books before heading elsewhere, or make it the main indoor stop on a wet day. Its Allerton Road address is useful to keep distinct from Liverpool’s other branches when following citywide event links.

Check the opening pattern before setting off. The council lists Thursday and Sunday closures, as well as bank holidays; Saturday opening ends at 4pm. An access ramp, accessible toilet and car park are listed for this branch. These are library facilities, not a promise that a particular children’s event is running.

Leave time for Allerton Towers

Allerton Towers is the outdoor counterpart: a 35-acre former estate with remnants of its orangery and other historic buildings, plus a partially walled garden. A simple wander gives children different shapes and textures to notice without turning the visit into a tightly scheduled trail.

For younger children, the council identifies a small play area near the Menlove Avenue entrance. Access is also available from Woolton Road, so choose the entrance that fits your plan.

Choose a session rather than just a hall

Allerton URC hosts several different operators. Tots & Co offers toys, dressing-up, puzzles, craft and singing for children from birth to four, with a grown-up attending too. Its Tuesday morning sessions are term-time only, and the £2-per-child charge includes refreshments. Do not turn that timetable into a half-term booking.

Tiny Steps Together is a different Monday option for babies up to fifteen months. Caterpillar Music brings songs, movement, instruments and themed props with Emma Gerrard; ask her for the right age group and current booking details. A trial may carry a charge. All these activities use the Mather Avenue church, but they are not interchangeable sessions or one provider.

A short, quiet look inside All Hallows

The church’s visitor hour is a good choice when your family would enjoy looking up at arches, timber and coloured glass rather than another play activity. All Hallows is known for its fourteen Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris windows. Its published walk-in time is Wednesday, 11.30am–12.30pm, with tea, coffee and conversation.

Keep the scale of the visit modest: this is an open church, not a drop-off class or play café. Other visiting times and group talks need arranging with the church. The guide photograph shows the church interior, not a current children’s session.

Save the bigger bookings for a separate plan

At 20 Forthlin Road, the appeal is stepping inside Paul McCartney’s childhood home. The National Trust combines it with Mendips in Woolton and admits visitors only on a pre-booked guided minibus tour. Pick the correct Speke Hall or Liverpool South Parkway departure; turning up at the house will not get you in. Members still pay a transport contribution, and steps and narrow doorways matter when planning access.

Allerton Manor’s restaurant and ticketed entertainment offer another kind of outing. For fireworks, account for the complete £11-per-person ticket including its booking fee, outdoor standing conditions and separately purchased food. Recheck the current ticket selector before promising children a place. The calendar is the right place for changing event dates and booking status, not this evergreen guide.
