Portobello, Edinburgh with kids: seaside, books, art and theatre

Portobello is Edinburgh’s seaside neighbourhood, with a sandy beach and promenade close to a High Street of local venues. Families can mix a short outdoor stop at Towerbank Play Park with books on Rosefield Avenue, or make a booked art or theatre class the main event. Bellfield’s toddler group and youth theatre offer a different kind of outing from the Town Hall’s markets and seasonal shows. Plan around the actual activity, not the neighbourhood name: pool closures, school-term groups and course-only art bookings all matter here.

Updated

Keep a seafront outing small and weather-aware

Portobello’s beach and promenade are the simplest starting point for an unhurried family outing. The city’s official visitor guide describes winter walks as well as sandcastle-building in the sunshine. Choose a short section, leave time to stop and look at the sea, and let the conditions determine whether sand play or a brief walk makes more sense. A coastal outing is not the same as a recommendation to enter the water.

Towerbank Play Park offers a more focused outdoor stop, with swings, slides, climbing frames and balance beams. The official guide also notes benches for supervising adults. Pairing the play park with a little of the promenade can be more manageable than trying to cover the whole shore with tired children.

Check current warnings before leaving. At preparation on 24 October 2026 the council advertises an amber strong-wind warning from 9pm that evening until 9pm Sunday 25 October, covering Edinburgh. Follow national advice and reconsider exposed coastal plans during the warning. The photograph here is an earlier official sunny view of the seafront, not a picture of current conditions.

The familiar Portobello Swim Centre is not a dependable wet-weather substitute right now: its owner says the main pool, small pool and Turkish baths are closed while parts and repairs are arranged. New coaching bookings are also unavailable because of capacity and maintenance issues, while existing coaching customers have separate arrangements. Check the owner’s notice rather than relying on older tourism copy or a normal-hours table.

Use the library as a local reading and making stop

Portobello Library is at 14 Rosefield Avenue, just off the High Street. Families can browse and borrow books and use seating, while the branch’s children’s programme includes storytime, LEGO, craft and Chatterbooks. Wheelchair access, public toilets, baby changing and a cycle rack are listed by the council.

The usual Children’s Storytime starts at 4pm on Tuesday. LEGO Club and children’s craft are each listed at 2pm on fortnightly Fridays, so ask which date belongs to which activity before planning a special visit. Chatterbooks is the children’s reading group listed for 2pm on the fourth Saturday. These are programme patterns, not permission to invent a dated session or claim a place is reserved.

The published branch hours are Monday to Wednesday 10am–8pm, and Thursday to Saturday 10am–5pm. Contact staff at portobello.library@edinburgh.gov.uk or 0131 529 5558 for joining details and current arrangements. The teenage book group is a different age stream and is not a substitute for a younger-child activity.

Choose a Bellfield group that fits your child

Bellfield is the neighbourhood’s community hub, created from the former Old Parish Church buildings. Its different halls are used by independent providers, so the building’s timetable is a starting point rather than a single ticket covering everything. Book a class with its provider and check for changes or cancellations.

Busy Bees is a parent/carer and toddler group in the Large Hall on Tuesday mornings, 10am–noon during school term time only. Toys are described as suitable for babies through age five, with hot drinks for adults. The advertised charge is £3.50 per family, not per child. Contact Tammie Allan at busybeesbellfield@gmail.com about joining and the current session arrangements.

Edinburgh Youth Theatre offers Dramarama for ages 5–7 on Friday at 1pm–2pm or 2pm–3pm, and Saturday at 10am–11am. Drama Fun for ages 8–11 runs Saturday 11am–12.30pm. Upper Junior for ages 10–11 is Friday 2.30pm–4.30pm at Bellfield. These are the theatre owner’s current times; an older host timetable gives different Upper Junior hours.

The owner advertises monthly fees of £33.27 for Dramarama, £49.91 for Drama Fun and £66.56 for Upper Junior, with an £8 taster option. Create a parent account and enter the child’s details in the booking portal. No previous drama experience is required. Bursaries may cover 25%–100% for eligible families after application and supporting evidence; they last one term and repeat assistance is not guaranteed. The advertised winter term runs 19 October–19 December 2026, but that envelope alone does not confirm individual class dates.

Book art as a course, not a cheap single drop-in

Portobello Art School’s studio is at 7A East Brighton Crescent. The Wednesday outdoor-art group uses it as a base for facilities, collection and drop-off, with the studio available if conditions are adverse. Helen Leigh leads arts, crafts and games in nature for P1–P7 children. School-pickup tickets and an “other” ticket are separate options, so choose the arrangement that actually applies.

The Wednesday booking is £144 for the remaining eight-date block, not a per-session charge. All materials are included; children should dress for Scottish weather and bring snacks. The explicit remaining dates are 28 October; 4, 11, 18 and 25 November; and 2, 9 and 16 December 2026, each 3pm–5pm GMT. The page’s aggregate low-space label differs from individual ticket quantities: use the appropriate booking option and confirm availability.

Thursday’s P6/P7 studio class develops art and craft skills with space for personal projects. Children make their own way to the studio, and can bring projects or ideas as well as a snack. Materials are provided. It costs £162 for the remaining eight-date course: 29 October; 5, 12, 19 and 26 November; and 3, 10 and 17 December 2026, each 3.15pm–5pm GMT.

The near-term calendar entries for these courses are useful reminders, not separately purchasable sessions. The same full course charge and joining conditions apply. Several other art-school courses currently show fully booked: do not confuse a waitlist or an older completed date with available holiday provision.

Read the Town Hall ticket and date details

Portobello Town Hall is at 147–149 Portobello High Street. It hosts independent organisers rather than operating a general drop-in attraction, and it has no box office: use the actual event booking page or contact its organiser.

Discovery Wrestling’s Halloween Disco is advertised for Saturday 31 October 2026. Doors open at 2pm, first bell is 3.15pm and wrap-up is 7.30pm. Matches include Ronan King against BT Gunn and Judas Grey against Nick Justice, with a Halloween costume contest. The operator describes its live entertainment as suitable for the whole family.

The booking page lists General Admission £15, Kids General £5, Family of Four £35 and second-row floor £20. Front-row floor and balcony front-row are sold out. The labels do not state a numeric child-ticket threshold or family composition, so clarify those if they affect your purchase. Bring the PayPal purchase-confirmation email and use an email address you can access. All sales are final with no refunds; the organiser says a move to another show can be requested. Never imitate wrestling moves or stunts, even with supervision.

For a later, gentler plan, Support The Makers has a Christmas Makers Market on Saturday 21 November 2026, 11am–4pm. Browse handmade textiles, ceramics, stationery, jewellery and art. Market entry is free, while shopping, refreshments and any separately booked upper-hall workshops cost extra. The main hall and foyer have a ramp beside the entrance; accessible toilets are available and dogs should stay on leads. Limited street parking makes public transport worth considering. This November market is later than the 24 October–6 November reporting window.
