Locks Heath with children: playgrounds, music and family classes

Green and yellow play equipment and an inclusive roundabout on dark play surfacing at Locks Heath House Park
Fareham Borough Council

Locks Heath offers small, local outings without building a whole day around a big attraction. At Locks Heath House Park, children can climb, swing and try the floor games, while Laurel Gardens adds an inclusive roundabout and car-workshop role play. Around the Shopping Village, Lockswood Community Centre brings together baby music, preschool dance, gymnastics and after-school art, drama and sport. St John’s adds a term-time toddler morning with play, crafts and refreshments. Choose a class that fits your child, or keep the plan as simple as a visit to a nearby playground.

Pick a date before choosing a class

For something happening on a particular day, start with the local events calendar and follow through to the organiser’s booking page. Many children’s groups work around school terms, while ticket availability can differ between two sessions on the same morning.

Moo Music’s current Locks Heath booking calendar advertises Wednesday sessions from 4 November to 16 December 2026. Its booking notice says the previous half term ends on 23 October and the new block begins on 2 November. That does not make a normal Wednesday timetable an October-half-term session: choose one of the actual advertised dates.

A playground can be the whole outing

Locks Heath House Park Play Area, reached from St Johns Road or Locks Heath Park Road, has toddler climbing equipment, a climbing wall, trim trail, swings and floor games including snakes and ladders. Its inclusive roundabout and face-to-face adult-and-child Tango swing offer different ways to play together. The park also has a concrete half-pipe and a separate games area with a football goal.

Laurel Gardens has a smaller-scale mix of toddler equipment, swings, play panels and a springy. The council lists an inclusive roundabout, inclusive car-workshop role-play unit and inclusive communication board, making imaginative play part of the choice as well as climbing and swinging.

Other local options include Drake Close, opposite Park Gate Primary School, with junior and toddler multi-play units; St Michaels Road, with a climbing net and rock wall; and Hollybrook Gardens, with pedestrian access, a basket swing and a separate games area. On Warsash Road, King George V has toddler and junior climbing units, a snake swing and inclusive roundabout. Pick one convenient playground rather than trying to turn them into a route.

Match the music session to your child

Moo Music at Lockswood is a shared activity: children sing, move and play to original songs while their adults join in. Mixed Moo is for confident walkers up to school age, or siblings of varying ages; the organiser asks babies who are not confidently moving to book Baby Moo instead. Baby Moo is for babies from birth to walking, without a made-up numerical walking-age limit.

The current booking options put Mixed Moo at 09:30–10:10 and 10:30–11:10, with Baby Moo at 11:30–12:00. Check the exact date and ticket rather than assuming that every option has space. PAYG tickets apply to one selected date, while block tickets cover the seven advertised dates.

For Mixed Moo, one-child PAYG costs £8.50 and two-sibling PAYG £12.75; the seven-date blocks are £52.50 and £78.75 respectively. Siblings under six months attending with an older sibling go free, with their details added to booking notes. Baby Moo lists one-child PAYG at £7.50 and a seven-date block at £45.50. Twin options need two places and may be unavailable even when a single-child ticket can be booked.

Grippy socks are advisable, and you may bring a blanket, mat or cushion. Adults remain responsible for supervision. Only water is allowed in the class area; breast and bottle feeding are welcome, but take other snacks outside. Bring a changing mat if needed and take used nappies away.

Movement for preschoolers

Gym Tots uses gymnastics equipment, hand-held apparatus and structured movement activities for under-fives. Adult-and-child groups lead into independent sessions, with groups arranged by age and ability. The centre lists Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday morning sessions during term time; ask Locks Heath & Gosport Gymnastics Club to place your child in the right group.

Starz Ballet’s centre timetable lists Friday Introduction to Independent Ballet for ages 3–4, 09:15–09:45, followed by social time with toys and complimentary hot drinks. Mixed Ages Ballet follows at 10:15–10:45 for ages six months–six years. Classes are mostly term time; contact the school before attending.

Tappy Toes offers Monday movement and dance in the studio: Tots Toes for ages 2½–5, 09:45–10:15, then free play until 10:45, followed by Teeny & Toddle Toes for ages six months–2½, 10:45–11:15. Book with the group leader rather than treating the timetable as a drop-in invitation.

Art, drama and sport for older children

Kids Art Club is for ages 7–11 in the Lockswood meeting room on Wednesdays, 16:15–17:15. For performance, Artisan Theatre School advertises Monday Drama, 16:45–17:45 for ages six and over, and Friday Musical Theatre, 15:45–17:45 for ages 5–16. Book directly with the relevant group leader or school.

Kool Kidz Netball introduces children to netball and multi-sports. Its advertised Lockswood Tuesday options are Buzzers for ages 5–7, 16:05–16:50, and Fliers for ages 7–9, 17:00–17:55, during term time. The provider’s broader 3–10 age description does not mean both local sessions accept every age.

Phoenix School of Martial Arts offers Saturday children’s Freestyle Taekwondo with age-and-belt groups. Beginners and younger children need the appropriate class, not simply any free Saturday slot. Southern Karate Association also advertises a children-and-adults class welcoming all abilities on Wednesdays, 17:00–18:00 during term time. Speak to the instructor before booking.

A term-time toddler morning at St John’s

St John’s toddler group meets in the Grove Room/church at 7 Church Road on Thursdays during term time, 10:00–11:30. Babies, toddlers and preschool children can dance, play and make crafts while parents meet other families. Refreshments are provided for everyone.

No booking is needed. The church asks for a £1 donation per family; email laura@sjlh.org.uk if you would like more information. Keep half-term plans separate from this term-time group.

Getting the practical details right

Lockswood Community Centre is at 2 Centre Way in Locks Heath Shopping Village. The centre advertises four hours of free parking, disabled spaces immediately outside and a bus stop about 50 metres away. General opening is Monday to Saturday, with bank holidays closed. Individual activities have their own bookings and times.

The centre describes its facilities as disability friendly, but the lift cannot be used in a fire evacuation. For first-floor activities, group leaders must ensure participants can use the stairs in an emergency. Discuss access with the organiser before choosing an upstairs class.

For a short outing, one activity and one playground are enough. Confirm a new class place first, check the organiser’s current calendar for a dated visit, and leave room to change the plan if your child is tired.
