Knaphill with children: playgrounds, library rhymes and miniature trains

Knaphill makes room for simple local outings as well as a special train ride. Waterers Park and Sussex Road Recreation Ground give younger children and primary-schoolers places to play outdoors, while the library behind the Anchor pub brings books, nursery rhymes and creative activities into the village centre. On Guildford Road, LESTA offers a choice of dance and musical-theatre classes, starting with imaginative movement for preschoolers. Mizens Railway adds miniature trains on advertised running days and seasonal evenings; check its calendar before making that the centre of your visit.

Start with a local playground
Waterers Park on Barley Mow Lane has play areas for children up to 6 and up to 12. The council also lists a multi-use games area, tennis courts, cricket and football pitches, plus parking. Pick playground time or a game rather than treating booked sports facilities as part of ordinary admission.
Sussex Road Recreation Ground is another local option, with play areas for the same two age groups and parking. Choose the site that fits your journey and leave time for the kind of unhurried play children can make their own.
- Waterers Park
A local park with play areas for younger children and up to age 12.
- Sussex Road Recreation Ground
A neighbourhood playground stop for younger and primary-age children.
Books and rhymes in the village centre
Knaphill Library is at 4 Anchor Crescent, behind the Anchor pub. Pebble Rhymetime is for under-fives and their parents or carers: nursery rhymes, action songs and percussion, with starts listed at 10:30 on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Surrey Libraries describes its free sessions as about half an hour.
For a creative afternoon, the branch lists Crafternoon on Fridays 15:30–16:45 at £1 per child, with no booking needed. Its current notice specifically excludes Friday 23 October. Check the branch page for holiday activities and current notices rather than relying on a regular weekday alone.
The library has automatic doors, a hearing loop and a disabled toilet. Monday opening is 13:00–17:00; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday are 10:00–13:00 and 14:00–17:00; Saturday is 09:30–16:00. It is closed Wednesday, Sunday and bank holidays. Free parking is behind the Co-op on the High Street.

A term-time play-and-song morning
Knaphill Baptist Church’s Parents and Toddlers meets on Tuesdays 09:30–11:30 during term time at 88 High Street. Children play with toys while adults chat, then the group comes together for songs. It costs £1 per family, paid when signing in.
You can turn up without advance booking; ring the doorbell beside the closed front door. Bring your own refreshments, as the group says it is not currently providing them.
Choose a class by age and interest
LESTA teaches at its own Knaphill studios at Medway House on the Lansbury Estate, Guildford Road. Melody Movement is for ages 2½–4, using stories, music and creative movement; the autumn 2026 timetable lists Saturday 10:00–10:30. First Ballet, Modern & Tap follows for ages 4–5, on Saturdays 09:00–10:00.
School-age choices include tap, modern, jazz, acro, hip hop and musical theatre from age 4, plus contemporary from age 8. These are different styles, not a reason to book every available class. Tell the school your child’s age and interests and let the teacher confirm the right level. Bring a gymnastics or yoga mat for acro.
A three-week trial is £30 per child and can include as many classes as desired. Regular fees are collected monthly by GoCardless and depend on class length: £25 for 30 minutes, £30 for 45, £33 for 60, £40 for 75 and £48 for 90. The school works on 12 weeks per term and 36 weeks per year; packages have separate monthly prices. Request a place before attending.

Make Mizens Railway the main outing
Mizens Railway is on Barrs Lane in Knaphill. Its miniature trains make a different kind of family outing from an ordinary playground visit, but the 2026 summer season has ended: the railway is now closed except for advertised special events.
Children under 12 months may visit but cannot ride for insurance reasons. Younger children who ride must sit on carriage seats, not on laps, in arms or in a sling. Standard running-day tickets and special-event tickets have different prices and booking arrangements.
The owner advertises Winter Lights on 21 and 22 November 2026, 17:00–20:00. Pre-book a one-hour slot. The £10 ticket includes its 50p booking fee, two train rides and a drink. Under-12-months may visit free but cannot ride. The footbridge and path to the pond will be closed. Use the organiser page for current tickets and availability.

Keep the plan simple
For a younger child, start with a library rhyme session or a term-time toddler morning and add a playground only if the day allows. For a new class, confirm placement and payment terms first. For trains, choose an advertised date and check the booking conditions before travelling.
