Henleaze with children: books, crafts and holiday play

Henleaze is a useful neighbourhood for small, close-to-home plans rather than a single big attraction. Northumbria Drive library brings together books, baby rhymes, Duplo and Saturday crafts. The Drive’s St Peter’s hall hosts local groups, while Brecon Road’s Shine Sports Hall offers booked creative and gymnastics days for primary-school children. During school holidays, School’s Out opens Henleaze Infant School to children from other local schools as well as its own campus. That makes it worth distinguishing a short accompanied library visit from a full childcare day: their ages, booking requirements and costs are quite different.

Build a short outing around Northumbria Drive library

Henleaze Library is a good starting point when a short indoor plan is enough. You can choose books and combine a visit with a genuinely advertised activity, without paying for a whole childcare day. The branch lists wheelchair access and breastfeeding welcome, and links to an AccessAble guide for more detailed access information.

For babies and toddlers, Rhyme and Storytime shares songs and stories in a short accompanied session. The owner describes it as suitable for ages 0–3. The Tuesday session is around 20 minutes, while the Thursday detail has a half-hour window. Both are free without booking, but children under 12 need an accompanying adult. Use the current dated listing for the next session rather than assuming every weekly pattern operates.

Duplo Drop-in is for ages one and over. Find the bricks on a blanket in the children’s library or ask staff, and supervise your child while they build. The advertised Monday window is 11:00–15:00: it is an opportunity to drop in and play, not four hours of supervised teaching.

Keep Saturday crafts simple and accompanied

Crafternoon changes its paper, glue and scissors activity each week. At Henleaze the event’s explicit entry range is 4–11, despite the wider series description saying the crafts are aimed at 3–10-year-olds. Follow the actual branch admission restriction. An adult must stay and supervise, especially when children use scissors and glue.

The Saturday drop-in runs within a 12:00–16:00 window and is free, with no need to book. Check the actual dated card before leaving home. Normal library hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 11:00–17:00, Wednesday and Friday 13:00–19:00 and Saturday 10:00–17:00; Sunday is closed. Short-notice closures can still change a plan.

Cycle stands are in front of the library and across the street. Drivers have a small rear car park and nearby street parking, rather than a guaranteed space reserved for an activity.

Compare holiday clubs by the whole day and whole price

School’s Out runs holiday play at Henleaze Infant School on Park Grove, welcoming school children aged 4–11 from other local schools as well as Henleaze Infant and Junior schools. Its autumn programme mixes crafts, playground games, sports and outdoor play. The explicitly advertised October dates are 26–30 October 2026; use the live listing for day-by-day choices and booking.

A full day is 08:15–17:30 at £32.50, with half days at £20, plus the mandatory £12 annual registration fee. Register with KidsClubHQ and pay when booking. Once booked, places are non-refundable and non-transferable. Bring a packed lunch, water bottle and clothes for messy play and the weather; do not bring nuts or sesame. Unless needed for access, do not use the school car park for drop-off or collection.

Brecon Road’s Shine Sports Hall has separate creative workshops and gymnastics days for Reception to Year 6. Creative days include Halloween crafts, costumes, junk modelling and games; gymnastics covers floor work, apparatus and an optional end-of-day display. Standard sessions are 09:00–15:30 at £35. Extended childcare is extra: early drop-off £5.50, late pick-up £5 and Snack & Chill £3.50. For the latest finish, both late options must be booked. Register with Shine, check the selected date’s availability and read the holiday-club 48-hour cancellation terms rather than relying on the generic six-day footer.

Know what a hall visit means at St Peter’s

The guide photograph shows the real main hall at St Peter’s on The Drive: a wooden floor, tall windows and curtained stage, photographed for the venue’s own website. It is not a picture of a particular current children’s session. The hall has a smaller side room and courtyard, with access to a children’s toilet, and hosts separately organised groups. Book or contact the relevant group rather than arriving expecting an open play centre.

St Peter’s welcomes children of all ages at Sunday 10:00 Christian worship. Books and quiet toys are available in church. On many term-time Sundays children and helpers use the hall for age-specific activities; during half term and school holidays activity sheets and other resources are provided instead. Register children attending hall sessions and ask about the current schedule.

The Footprints toddler group requires registration and has a waiting-list process when full. It is not treated here as a guaranteed available drop-in. For a first church or hall visit, contact the parish office on 0117 9624524. Keep the library, school holiday clubs and church groups as separate plans with their own admission and supervision arrangements.
