Canada Water with children: dockside walks, books and baby classes

Canada Water / British Land

Canada Water makes it easy to combine a small outdoor adventure with an indoor activity: follow the red boardwalk through Canada Dock’s wetlands, then head to the library for books, songs, games or creative time. Older children have coding, Lego and reading groups to choose from, while Canada Water Studios brings sensory play and musical activity for babies and under-fives. The leisure centre adds swimming and sports to the mix. Start with one activity that fits your child’s age, then leave room for a dockside wander rather than packing in the whole neighbourhood.

Start with a dockside wander

Canada Dock’s red boardwalk winds through water and planted wetland islands, giving an ordinary walk a different view. Make this the outdoor part of a short outing, with Canada Water station and the library as useful nearby anchors. Stay together beside the water, especially with younger children.

This is a guide to Canada Water itself. The surrounding district also has larger parks and attractions, but a local books-and-boardwalk visit does not need a longer trip through Rotherhithe or Bermondsey.

Songs, stories and colour for younger children

Canada Water Library is at 21 Surrey Quays Road, SE16 7AR. Bookstart welcomes ages 0–4 on Mondays in term time, 10:00–11:30. Rhymetime is on Tuesdays in term time, 14:15–14:45. The baby and toddler session runs on Thursdays all year round, 11:00–11:45.

Colour Me Happy is advertised for all the family on Fridays in term time, 16:00–17:00. Saturday craft and colouring is for ages five and over, 14:15–15:15, with limited availability. Pick the session that fits, rather than assuming activities run throughout the library’s opening hours.

The building has flat access, disabled parking, a lift to all floors and accessible toilets, with adult and baby changing. On weekdays the ground floor opens at 08:00 for the café, computers, reservations and a limited selection of books; the rest opens at 09:00. It closes at 20:00. Weekend hours are Saturday 09:00–17:00 and Sunday 12:00–16:00.

Books, building, coding and games

For ages 7–11, Chatterbooks meets on the last Monday each month in term time, 16:00–17:30. STEM, coding and robotics is advertised for ages 7–18 on term-time Mondays, 18:15–19:15. Picture This is for ages 5–11 on alternate Tuesdays, 16:00–17:30; ask the library which Tuesday is next.

Board games club is for ages five and over on term-time Wednesdays, 16:00–17:00. Lego League is for ages 7–9 on term-time Thursdays, 16:00–17:00; email Luke.Gregory@southwark.gov.uk to find out more and book.

The monthly Teen Dungeons and Dragons group includes ages 10–16 and is advertised on a Wednesday, 16:30–19:30. Contact luke.gregory@southwark.gov.uk for the actual date and a place. These regular programmes have different joining arrangements, so check the appropriate group before setting off.

Sensory play and musical mornings

Canada Water Studios is in Vancouver House on Surrey Quays Road, SE16 7BW, around 100 metres from the station. Its family page advertises Musical Mayhem Miniatures on Thursday mornings for little ones under five: singing, dancing, props, crafts and messy play. Follow the organiser’s booking link for the current time, fee and available places.

Baby Sensory Southwark welcomes babies from birth to 13 months at the studios. Songs, movement, textures and sensory play give babies and their grown-ups something to explore together. The current Autumn 2026 programme advertises Wednesday mornings from the week commencing 12 October to the week commencing 14 December. Joining partway through is subject to availability.

New customers can try a three-session settling-in taster, with first refusal on an ongoing space. Contact southwark@babysensory.co.uk about shorter blocks. The booking feed lists 6–13 months at 10:00–11:00 and birth–6 months at 11:30–12:30 on Wednesdays; the younger group currently shows zero spaces, so ask about its waitlist. Advertised block prices are £43.50 for a three-session trial, £96 for six sessions and £116 for the full-term product, not per-visit fees. The operator currently says no weekend events are planned until 2027; use its timetable for actual bookable options.

Several other baby activities on the studio page are invitations to register interest, not scheduled classes. If parent-and-baby yoga or baby massage is the reason for your visit, contact the studio first.

An active indoor alternative

Canada Water Leisure Centre adds an eight-lane swimming pool, sports hall and exercise studios to the neighbourhood. The district’s official information lists inclusive facilities, pay-as-you-go options and monthly memberships.

Choose an actual family swim or suitable children’s sports activity through the operator’s booking system. Check the pool’s supervision rules, admission arrangements and full price there before travelling; the general fitness timetable is not a children’s swim timetable.

Keep the plan simple

For a short outing, choose a library group and leave time for Canada Dock. For a baby-class morning, book the right age group at the studios first. A swim needs its own session and supervision check rather than being an automatic extra.

Use the neighbourhood’s current listings for dated activities and the organiser’s booking page for availability. Term-time groups and courses are useful regular options, but their descriptions are not reservations.
