Belgrave with kids: swimming, ball games and family culture

Leicester City Council

Belgrave gives families several different ways to spend a local afternoon: a swim on Cossington Street, a ball game at the free Orchardson Avenue courts, or a performance at the Peepul Centre. Around the Golden Mile, leave space for a slower outdoor break rather than trying to fit everything into one visit. The family hub on Cossington Street is a useful starting point for parents looking for local early-years activities and support. For a gentler organised outing, the Canal & River Trust advertises autumn and winter walks from Cross Corners, with children welcome alongside a parent or carer.

Bring a ball to Orchardson Avenue

The refurbished multi-use games area near the Peepul Centre has dedicated football and basketball markings, fencing and goal ends. It is free and open access, making it a flexible option when you want outdoor play without committing to a class.

The photograph shows a child and a Leicester Riders Foundation coach at the April 2026 reopening. It illustrates this local court, not a promise that coaching will be taking place when you arrive.

Choose the right kind of swim

Cossington Street Sports Centre has a 30-metre pool. Use the live timetable for a public session; the building’s opening hours are not the hours of every pool activity. If your child is learning, ask the centre about a place on its Swim Leicester pathway instead.

Under-eights must have an adult over sixteen in the water, with up to two under-eights per adult. Children who are not yet toilet trained need swim nappies. Lesson prices are monthly or annual programme charges, not a single-session drop-in price; choose the appropriate group with the centre before paying.

Make the walk the outing

The Canal & River Trust’s Free Winter Well-being Walks start and finish at Cross Corners Community Art Centre on Thurcaston Road. Expect about an hour at a leisurely pace, looking at trees and wild flowers and listening for birds, followed by half an hour for a drink and biscuits.

These walks are for Leicester City residents. Under-eighteens need a parent or carer, and dogs are not allowed. Book your particular advertised date: the organiser emails the exact meeting details afterwards.

Plan around a performance, not just a building

The Peepul Centre is a local theatre and arts venue with accessible seating and on-site parking. Its family programme includes cultural performances and seasonal theatre. Check the current show page and ticket terms before committing: an advertised performance and a confirmed available ticket are different things.

Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre on Rothley Street is another venue for cultural events. During Diwali, use current official event information for times and admission rather than assuming last year’s arrangements or a fireworks display.

Keep a smaller plan in reserve

For a short outdoor break, the council lists Cossington Street Recreation Ground and Belgrave Gardens among its local green spaces. Belgrave Gardens is not a promise that Belgrave Hall’s indoor rooms or enclosed grounds are open.

Parents looking for activities and support for younger children can contact Belgrave Best Start Family Hub on Cossington Street. Ask for the current local programme and joining arrangements before travelling for a particular group.
